Героя обвиняют в убийстве своего подчиненного — агента под прикрытием. Накануне этого убийства он узнает от своего агента, где скрывается криминальный авторитет. Этот бандит уже давно разыскивается за убийства, и герой бросается по следу. Но почти сразу его задерживают сотрудники управления собственной безопасности. Зачем начальнику убойного отдела понадобилось убивать своего коллегу, так ли уж прав глава отдела «спецопераций», который преследует его? Разобраться в этом призывают вышедшего на заслуженный отдых полковника. Полковник не особо рвётся возвращаться в органы, его принципы и слегка устаревшие взгляды на жизнь никого, похоже, в этом мире не вдохновляют. Но именно он – честный, опытный, крутой полицейский становится главой Управления собственной безопасности Петербурга. Такой, как он, не может не докопаться до правды.
В последние десятилетия человечество пришло к принципиально новому за всю историю борьбы со старостью взгляду на эту проблему — у нее нет одной причины и единственного механизма, а значит, и невозможно одно решение.
