На глухую станцию Вериха, безнадежно затерянную в метельных заносах, прибывает эшелон с особыми заключенными. Воспользовавшись снежным бураном, один из этапируемых, Кирилл Полетаев, сбегает из-под конвоя. Пробираясь сквозь зимний лес, Кирилл, полузамерзший и обессиленный, добирается до родной деревни. Герои фильма разделяются на два враждебных лагеря. Одни, знавшие Полетаева еще до ареста, сталкиваются с проблемой нравственного выбора: погибнуть, либо поступиться простыми человеческими ценностями – любовью, милосердием и уважением друг к другу. Другие, исполняя свой долг, устраивают на Кирилла настоящую охоту. Бабушка Анна Захаровна, Шурка и председатель Кузьмич спасают Полетаева и при этом страдают сами. Но вот парадокс – спасенный от «людей-волков» Кирилл наталкивается на стаю настоящих волков и здесь уже некому прийти к нему на помощь…
